Grass-Pennisetum setaceum (Ornamental Grass)
×
Color Name: Rubrum
Rubrum grass, scientifically known as Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum', is a popular ornamental grass valued for its striking, deep burgundy-red foliage and graceful, arching form. This warm-season grass thrives in full sun and produces showy, bottlebrush-like plumes of burgundy-purple flowers that emerge in summer and continue through fall. While it is a perennial in warmer climates (USDA Zones 9-11), it's typically grown as an annual in cooler regions. Rubrum grass is drought-tolerant, relatively low-maintenance, and adds dramatic color and texture to garden beds, borders, and containers.
Growing Tips: In almost all areas Rubrum will be an annual grass. Once the grass turns brown in the fall you can cut it back to the ground whenever you would like. Rubrum is a warm-season grass. Where temperatures get colder than 20 degrees F, the plants should be treated as annuals. Once the grass turns brown it can either be removed immediately or removed in the spring. It should not be expected to live through the winter and begin growing again in the spring.
