Also known as leadwort, this low, spreading rockery or groundcover plant deserves a place in every yard, with its rich green, mat-forming foliage that turns bronze red in fall, just as the intensely periwinkle blue flowers emerge. A stunning contrast and sadly under-utilized in today's gardens. Happy in sun or part shade and average garden soil. Not bothered by pests or disease.
Growing Tips: This versatile groundcover will grow in either full sun or part shade. Plants will perform better in partial shade in southern climates. Afternoon shade will result in more open plants that spread more freely. Leadwort goes completely dormant in the winter, and tends to emerge late in the spring, so be careful to remember where you have planted it. Planting before midsummer is highly recommended. Any divisions should be made in spring. Winter mulch in zone 5 is also recommended.
