Sorghastrum nutans (Yellow Prairie Grass)
×
Color Name: Golden Sunset
Try Golden Sunset for a fresh take on ornamental grass! This upright Sorghastrum grass differs from other, similar ornamental grasses due to its olive-green tone. Golden Sunset Yellow Prairie Grass flowers in late summer, and its golden seed heads hold on into winter. The flower heads grow in abundance, and are excellent for drying and use in arrangements and crafts. This grass doesn't fall over or "lodge," and its stems stay upright through all seasons. Wide leaves form a solid base with long golden seedheads rising above the plant in late summer. Wheat-like seedheads reach 10-12" in length and hold their form, adding winter interest.
Growing Tips: Sorghastrum is a native grass that is very easy to grow and is a good grass for beginners. It will grow in any soil, from sand to clay, is drought tolerant once established, and even withstands periodic flooding. Grow this grass in full sun. It will tolerate light shade, but will flop over if the shade is too heavy. Sorgastrum is wind and salt tolerant, making it a good choice for seaside gardens or along roads that are salted in winter.
