Evergreen Ilex crenata (Japanese holly)
×
Color Name: Drops of Gold
It's amazing how you can turn a dependable plant into the next hot plant with just a splash of color. 'Drops of Gold' is a great example as this Ilex morphs from boring to brilliant with splotches of bright gold color spangling its small, convex, deep green foliage. This show of gold is even brighter in full sun and remains that way without the fading that can occur in the heat of the summer for some yellow colored plants. Easy to care for and easy to trim, 'Drops of Gold' is a shot of life for any foundation or low hedge.
Growing Tips: Chlorosis may occur on alkaline soils. Tolerates pruning well but is generally best left to take on its own natural shape. Grows in shade, but color and form are best with some sun.
Soil: Ideally, grow in moist acidic soils with good drainage. Tolerates urban conditions well, however.
Pruning: Seldom needed, but may be shaped in early summer if desired. Color is best on new growth.
Uses:Groupings, masses, perennials or shrub borders, specimen, screens, hedges or containers.
